I read the other reviews of this product and took a few precautions before applying to my garden soil, here is what I did:
In one garden location I first laid out a layer of planters paper, then I placed this film over it. I folded the film over a bit on the edges and held it down with bricks and stone garden edging. The next step, planting: I cut an x slit into the film and paper, scooped out a trowels worth of potting soil or seed starting medium and placed my seeds within. Germination was speedy and 100% effective. Plants are doing extremely well with 0 weeds.
In garden location 2 I first put down a layer of recycled paper grocery bags (cut single thickness and laid flat) then covered with the film. To hold it down I used biodegradable stakes. This also worked very well. In this garden plot I also cut an x slit into the film, but because I was transplanting established pre-starts I dug down into the soil underneath and added plants and a few spoons of earth worm castings. This was also a successful weed free garden experience.
One tip is to make sure your plants are the lowest point of the film, so that the water will pool into the plant location instead of in random places on top on the film.
Very light weight and easy to spread by hand. Keeps most weeds out.
Certain kinds of grass are able to sprout right through the plastic, like its not there.
